Turf Cleaning in El Paso, TX and Southern New Mexico

Turf that does not smell like dogs.

Artificial turf saves water and stays green through an El Paso summer, but dogs use it like grass. Waste and urine work into the fibers and infill, and heat brings the smell back up. Turf cleaning clears the surface and treats the odor.

  • Waste picked up from the turf
  • Attention to the spots dogs use
  • Odor treatment
  • A schedule that matches the season

What's Included

What does Turf Cleaning include?

  1. 01

Waste picked up from the turf

Solids come off first. On turf, small pieces settle between fibers, so the surface needs a careful pass, not a quick look.

  2. 02

Attention to the spots dogs use

Dogs tend to use the same patch of turf again and again. Those spots get the most attention.

  3. 03

    Odor treatment

A deodorizing treatment is applied to the turf to work on the urine smell that builds up in the backing and infill. We will tell you which product we use before applying it.

  4. 04

A schedule that matches the season

Turf smell is worst in the hottest months. Ask about how often your turf should be treated, and we will set a schedule with you.

  5. 05

    Your installer's care guide

Artificial turf is more than the green blades you see. Under them there is a backing, and often infill and other layers. One turf maker's care manual warns that a cleaner that is fine for the blades can still harm another part of the system. The same manual sends owners to their dealer about pet waste and infill care, because both differ by installation. The same caution applies to anything you put on the turf between visits. If you have a care guide from your installer or manufacturer, share it when you request a quote.

  6. 06

    Where an enzyme deodorizer fits

The same manual says that, depending on how much the turf is used and how many dogs use it, enzyme neutralizers may help keep odor down. The deodorizer option in the GP Scoops free treatment is an enzyme deodorizer. Whether it suits your turf, and whether your care guide allows it, is a good question to ask before it goes on.

  7. 07

    Why turf gets so hot

Most of the heat comes from the blades. Penn State's sports surface researchers point to the synthetic fibers as a major source of surface heat, because real grass releases water vapor and cools itself while plastic does not. Infill color made only a few degrees of difference in their heat lamp tests. For a dog area, that means planning for heat as well as odor, whatever color the infill is.

When You Need It

When do you need Turf Cleaning?

If any of this sounds familiar, it's time.

Turf does not absorb and break down waste the way soil does. Here are signs your turf may need attention.

  • 01

The turf smells in the afternoon

Turf can get much hotter than the air above it in direct sun, and the smell rises with the temperature. That is usually the first sign.

  • 02

One spot is clearly the bathroom

If your dog uses the same corner every time, that corner holds most of the odor. It is the place to start.

  • 03

Hosing it down is not working

Rinsing moves some residue, but in a dry climate the water evaporates and the smell often comes back. A treatment aims at the source.

  • 04

    Kids play on the turf

Turf is often the play area too. Keeping it picked up and treated makes it a nicer place to sit and play.

  • 05

Dust and grit have built up

Spring wind leaves dust, leaves and grit in turf, and one turf maker's care manual treats clearing debris and brushing as routine upkeep. If your turf looks matted or dusty, describe it when you request a quote, so the conversation starts from what your turf looks like today.

  • 06

    Your turf is new

New turf is the easiest time to plan its care, before a season of heat has let odor build. Ask your installer for the care guide and what they recommend for pet areas, then share it when you request a quote.

  • 07

    Water pools or seams lift

Standing water after rain, lifted seams or flattened spots are installation and repair questions, and cleaning does not fix them. If you see any of these, mention them. Your installer is the one to call for repairs, and knowing about them up front keeps the cleaning conversation clear.

  • 08

    Your turf is under warranty

One turf maker's manual ties warranty claims to showing that its installation and care guidelines were followed. If your turf is still under warranty, keep the care guide where you can find it, and keep a simple note of what has been put on the turf and when. That record is useful to you whoever cleans it.

  • 09

You are tempted by bleach or a pressure washer

Between visits, the strongest cleaner in the garage can look like the answer. The same manual rules out cleaners with chlorine bleach and strongly caustic or acidic cleaners, and warns that a high-pressure spray can badly damage turf and wash out the infill. Check your own care guide before trying either.

  • 10

Several dogs wear the same paths

The manual lists multiple dogs among the uses that make turf high traffic. In those areas fibers mat and infill packs down, and periodic brushing with a synthetic-bristle brush, never metal or wire, spreads the infill back out and helps drainage. If your dogs run the same line along the fence every day, that line is worth a look, and you can ask whether brushing is part of a turf visit.

  • 11

The dogs avoid the turf on summer afternoons

They may have a reason. Penn State's Center for Sports Surface Research puts synthetic turf at generally 35 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than natural grass, which rarely goes above 100 degrees even on a hot day. The highest reading in the research it cites was 200 degrees, on a 98-degree day in Utah. Put your palm on the turf before the dogs go out on a summer afternoon, and keep a shaded spot or a cooler surface where they can go instead.

  • 12

You hose it down to cool it off

Water cools turf for minutes, not hours. In a study the Penn State researchers cite, 30 minutes of watering brought a turf surface from 174 degrees down to 85, but it was back to 120 five minutes later and 164 after 20 minutes. A rinse right before the dogs go out helps briefly, and it does nothing for the odor that heat brings back up.

  • 13

A patch looks melted or shiny

That is not dirt. The same turf maker's manual warns that sunlight reflected off windows can melt turf fibers, and that hot equipment set down by landscape crews can do the same. Cleaning will not undo it. Point out any melted or fused patches when you request a quote so they are not mistaken for staining, and ask your installer about the cause.

  • 14

    White spots appear after rinsing

Frequent rinsing has a side effect. The manual notes that mineral deposits can form on turf depending on the water source. If you hose the turf often and see a chalky film, mention it, and check your care guide before trying to remove it.

  • 15

You are still choosing a surface for the dogs

Each surface trades something. Turf stays green without watering, but it heats up and holds urine in its backing and infill. Gravel and rock drain, and they hide waste between the stones. Grass needs water and mowing, but Penn State's figures put it commonly at 75 to 95 degrees on a hot day, cooler than the air. Many yards end up with a mix, and pickup works on all of them.

Turf Cleaning FAQ

Common questions about turf cleaning.

If your question isn't on the list, give us a call.

Can you get the dog smell out of artificial turf?

Turf cleaning targets the urine odor that builds up in turf. Results depend on the turf, its age and how it was installed, so we will talk through your situation rather than promise a result.

Do you also scoop the rest of the yard?

Yes. Most turf yards have rock or dirt areas too. Check both Residential Poop Scooping and Turf Cleaning in your quote request.

What product do you use on turf?

Ask us. GP Scoops will tell you the product and any precautions before it is applied.

Will cleaning affect my turf warranty?

Warranty terms come from your installer or manufacturer, not from GP Scoops. If your warranty or care guide limits which products can go on the turf, share that before any treatment so it can be taken into account.

How do I get a price?

Send the short quote form or call. Price depends on details like how many dogs you have, your yard, and how often you want service, and GP Scoops goes over it with you before any service starts.

What schedules can I choose?

The quote form lets you say what you have in mind: weekly, every other week, twice a week, a one-time cleanup, or not sure yet. We talk through the options when we follow up.

What happens after I send the form?

Your request is saved so GP Scoops can follow up. You are asking GP Scoops to contact you at the number you gave, to confirm your yard, your dogs and the price.

Who owns GP Scoops?

GP Scoops is locally owned by Sam, who spent 14 years as a teacher before starting the business.

What services do you offer?

Residential poop scooping, deodorizing and sanitizing, turf cleaning, and waste station installation and service. Ask about commercial poop scooping and fly and wasp options available for your property.

Is there a free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment?

GP Scoops is offering a free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment. Ask about it when you request a quote, and we will explain how it works and who it applies to.
