Deodorizing & Sanitizing in El Paso, TX and Southern New Mexico

For the smell that stays behind.

Picking up waste removes most of the problem. In a hot, dry yard, urine and residue on rock, concrete and turf can keep smelling. Ask which parts of your yard and which surfaces the treatment can cover. Ask about our free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment.

  • Discuss the areas needing attention
  • A deodorizer for lingering odor
  • A sanitizing application
  • Added to a scooping visit

What's Included

What does Deodorizing & Sanitizing include?

  1. 01

    Discuss the areas needing attention

If odor lingers in a corner of the rock bed, along the fence or near the door, mention those spots when you ask about treatment. Confirm which areas and surfaces it can cover.

  2. 02

    A deodorizer for lingering odor

The deodorizer is aimed at the smell that pickup does not remove, which builds up in heat. We will tell you which product we use before we apply it.

  3. 03

    A sanitizing application

Ask where the sanitizer would be applied, which product would be used and how long pets and children should stay off a treated area. Confirm those details before arranging treatment.

  4. 04

    Added to a scooping visit

Treatment is meant for a yard that has just been picked up, so ask about adding it to a scooping visit.

  5. 05

How the free treatment is put together

The free treatment starts with a sanitizer. After that comes one of two things: an enzyme deodorizer for odor, or a fly option for yards where flies are the bigger complaint. Which one fits depends on your yard and what you ask for. Ask whether the fly option is available for your yard before you count on it.

  6. 06

What the words on a label mean

Deodorizer, sanitizer and disinfectant are not interchangeable words. A deodorizer is aimed at smell. Under EPA rules, a product that claims to sanitize or disinfect a surface is registered as an antimicrobial pesticide. Sanitizing is aimed at bacteria and is not meant to kill viruses. Disinfecting covers both and has to clear stricter testing, and many products are registered as both. A product that only cleans or deodorizes, with no claim to kill germs, is not one the EPA registers this way. When you ask which product would be used, its label shows whether it claims to deodorize, sanitize or disinfect.

  7. 07

Getting the yard ready for a treatment

Because sanitizers are registered as pesticides, pesticide safety advice applies to them. The National Pesticide Information Center at Oregon State University suggests a simple routine for anything applied where pets live: bring the pets in first, pick up toys, chew bones, food bowls and bedding, follow the label, and keep the animals away until the treated area is completely dry. The label may ask for longer. Ask how long the specific product needs before your dogs go back out, and plan the visit around it.

When You Need It

When do you need Deodorizing & Sanitizing?

If any of this sounds familiar, it's time.

If the yard still smells after it has been picked up, the cause is usually urine and residue that soak into whatever your dogs use as their bathroom. These are times treatment can help.

  • 01

The patio smells on hot afternoons

Concrete and pavers near the back door heat up through the afternoon, and that is when odor rises. Those surfaces are a good place to start.

  • 02

    You have artificial turf

Turf is popular across El Paso and Las Cruces because it needs no watering, but urine can collect in the backing and the infill. See our turf cleaning page for more.

  • 03

Several dogs share a small yard

More dogs in less space means the same spots get used again and again. Those spots are where treatment makes the most difference.

  • 04

    You are starting regular service

A first visit is a good time to treat the yard, after a full cleanup. Ask about our free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment when you request a quote.

  • 05

The smell comes from under the rock

In a rock bed, urine runs between the stones to the ground underneath, where a scoop never reaches. If the smell seems to come from inside the rock rather than off the top of it, say so when you request a quote. It helps to know where the odor is before talking about treatment.

  • 06

Flies bother you more than the smell

Some yards have more of a fly problem than an odor problem. In that case, ask about the fly option in place of the deodorizer, and GP Scoops will tell you whether it is available for your yard. Our fly and wasp control page explains why regular pickup comes first.

  • 07

Your yard bakes in the afternoon sun

EPA advice for registered sanitizers and disinfectants is to follow the label, paying close attention to the contact time, which is how long the surface has to stay wet. Rock, concrete and turf in direct desert sun dry quickly. If you want to understand how a treatment will work on your yard, ask when and how it is applied, and what the label says about the surfaces you have.

  • 08

    The smell peaks mid-afternoon

Notice when the odor is worst. Penn State research on synthetic surfaces found they heat up most between noon and 3 p.m. on clear, dry days with low humidity, which describes plenty of summer afternoons here. A smell that only rises in mid-afternoon points to whatever bakes in the sun, often turf or the concrete by the door, and that tells you where to point treatment first.

  • 09

A lawn or weed service treats the yard too

If someone else sprays or spreads anything on your yard, the National Pesticide Information Center suggests asking them what products they use and what the risk is to your pets. It also notes that granular lawn products may need pets kept off for 24 hours or longer while the granules dissolve and dry. Mention any other treatments when you ask about deodorizing and sanitizing, so the timing of each can be planned around the dogs.

  • 10

The dog run or doghouse holds the smell

Small enclosed spots take every visit, so odor concentrates there. CDC guidance for dog owners suggests cleaning a kennel or doghouse regularly so waste does not build up. Point those spots out when you ask about treatment, along with any side run the dogs use while you are at work.

  • 11

The smell follows the dogs inside

A dog door brings the yard into the house. CDC guidance is to clean up urine, poop or vomit indoors as soon as it happens and disinfect the area well. Outdoor treatment covers the yard side of the door, and the floor just inside is worth a closer look if that is where the smell seems to start.

  • 12

You treat the yard yourself between visits

Read the label of any store-bought product for the same things you would ask us: which surfaces it is meant for, whether it claims to sanitize or only to deodorize, and how long pets should stay off. If the label does not answer those questions, ask the maker before the dogs walk on it.

  • 13

The trash cart smells on its own

A cart holding a week of bagged waste in July can smell from across the yard, whatever the lawn looks like. Las Cruces code and Doña Ana County's ordinance both expect the container that holds pet waste to be emptied often enough to avoid a nuisance, and University of California pest guidance suggests washing cans out with soap and water now and then. If the odor you notice is strongest by the cart, say so, because it may be the cart and not the yard.

Deodorizing & Sanitizing FAQ

Common questions about deodorizing & sanitizing.

If your question isn't on the list, give us a call.

Is the deodorizer and sanitizer treatment really free?

GP Scoops is offering a free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment. Ask about it when you request a quote, and we will explain how it works and who it applies to.

Is the product safe for my dogs?

Ask us before your visit. We will tell you exactly which product is used and how long to keep pets and children off treated areas, so you can decide with the label in front of you.

Can I get treatment without scooping?

Treatment is meant to go on a yard that has just been picked up. Ask about your situation when you request a quote.

What is the difference between cleaning and sanitizing?

They are different steps. Cleaning removes dirt and organic matter from a surface. Sanitizing and disinfecting are separate claims about what a product does to a surface, and the EPA regulates both. A registered product's label lists the surfaces it is meant for and how long it has to stay in contact to work as directed. That is one reason pickup comes before treatment, and why asking to see the label is a fair request.

How do I get a price?

Send the short quote form or call. Price depends on details like how many dogs you have, your yard, and how often you want service, and GP Scoops goes over it with you before any service starts.

What schedules can I choose?

The quote form lets you say what you have in mind: weekly, every other week, twice a week, a one-time cleanup, or not sure yet. We talk through the options when we follow up.

What happens after I send the form?

Your request is saved so GP Scoops can follow up. You are asking GP Scoops to contact you at the number you gave, to confirm your yard, your dogs and the price.

Who owns GP Scoops?

GP Scoops is locally owned by Sam, who spent 14 years as a teacher before starting the business.

What services do you offer?

Residential poop scooping, deodorizing and sanitizing, turf cleaning, and waste station installation and service. Ask about commercial poop scooping and fly and wasp options available for your property.

Is there a free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment?

GP Scoops is offering a free deodorizer and sanitizer treatment. Ask about it when you request a quote, and we will explain how it works and who it applies to.
